Oz Open 2013: Day 2 Winners and Losers

 

One too many Flat White refreshments and a late showing of the filmic version of Les Mis meant sleep proved impossible last night, all the more reason then to indulge in some live tennis from Down Under.

One of the better tournaments for Eurosport coverage I was treated to the ding-dong (in every sense) battle between Caroline Wozniacki and Sabine Lisicki, a peach of a first-rounder such is the duo’s ‘on paper’ quality.

The fact that both women have very different technique and are both in something of a form malaise recently only made things all the more unpredictable.

Wozniacki finally endured (2-6, 6-3, 6-3 – at one point down and out at 0-3 down in the third) and thus joins todays’ main ‘winners’ which included usual suspects Murray, FedEx, Azarenka and Serena (in typically dramatic style, clearly a double bagel isn’t enough these days).

Other victors included Tsonga, Monfils, Cilic and Kvitova (who plays our own Laura Robson next) and a particularly self-depreciating Juan Martin Del Potro who, as the only other major winner outside the Big Four in almost a decade shouldn’t be quite so crestfallen.

Hero of the day – Kimiko Date Krumm (def N.Petrova 6-2, 6-0)

Not for the first time has the now 42-year-old made headlines with notable victories since her return to the game, but this – over a Petrova somewhat resurgent herself after that Tokyo title last year – is the biggest to date.

Shock of the day – Carla Suarez Navarro def Sara Errani 6-4 6-4

Only yesterday I questioned if the likeable but rather loud Italian could repeat or at least get close to maintaining the form  that saw her become one of 2012’s brightest stars. However Errani’s first round exit at the hands of Suarez Navarro (just ask Venus how dangerous she can be) has just made 2013 that much harder from the get-go.

Marathon-Match of the day – Jarkko Nieminen def Tommy Haas 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 8-6

The all-Aussie Duckworth-Mitchell fight was an early contender for the title but this star scuffle had it all, good to see Nieminen back in the frame after a career blighted by injury. The ever-green Haas continued to delight and remains more than a relevant top-twenty force.
