My notoriously bad predictions herein:
Tournament
Men’s Champion – Novak Djokovic
Okay, hardly a daring bet with this one, even given Novak’s Sampras-esque record here so far, he is dominating the men’s tour and will continue to do so by and large. Andy Murray and perhaps Rafa Nadal can spoil the party on their day, but the air of inevitability is all too strong this time.
Stanimal? He’ll do well to reach the semi-finals.
Women’s Champion – Simona Halep
Heart ruling the head on this one – unlike the above. It is a much more open tournament on the women’s side of things. I’m going with Simona if only because of that Madrid title win. Of course Serena, Vika and Garbine amongst a whole host of others could just as easily triumph too.
Day 1
Highlight matches
There are a lot of great match-ups today, enough so that the bigger stars won’t be missed. Potentially tricky openers for Muguruza (Schmiedlova), Nishikori (Bolleli) and Raonic (Tipsarevic) but the really intriguing encounters lie elsewhere.
Kuznetsova vs Shvedova
A match that prmoises quality from two dependable crowd-pleasers, Kuzzy in two.
Grigor Dimitrov vs Victor Troicki
Still a surprise to see that Baby-Fed isn’t seeded, but should be a dangerous floater. Still – how often have we expected more from him. Dimitrov in four.
Ivo Karlovic vs Alberto Montanes
The ever-dangerous Ivo against a clay specialist – a clash of styles like this is always good.
