A brief one this as I soon jump on a plane back from the Dominican Republic.
What will the next fortnight hold in store? The delicate balance at the top of the men’s game with the favourites all playing themselves down (with varying degrees of honesty and mind-games at play) is matched by the fascinatingly open women’s draw which sees multiple genuine picks for the title.
Men’s predictions
Winner – Rafa Nadal
That kinder draw, the age advantage over his biggest rival and an ever-present determination and self-belief will see the Spaniard home in a year in which he is set to dominate.
Finalist – Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic
Two players who are discounting their chances, one the more honest and citing his considerable years as the reason. The other, ever the imitator, fresh back from a lengthy break designed to replicate the instant success of last year’s surprise old guard. Put simply, never discount Roger, and Novak isn’t nearly as rusty as he wants us all too think.
Women’s predictions
Winner – Caroline Wozniacki
The form player of recent times and just inching towards her most confident best, this is a gut feeling pure and simple.
Finalist – Simona Halep or Garbine Muguruza
Simona has never really performed here and is one of the most tank-prone world number one’s in recent memory. But then she is just as likely to find her A-game. Garbine too is ripe for a meltdown, but has proven more than anyone to keep her cool at the business end of slams. Winning a couple won’t hurt either.
