Australian Open 2018: Day 2 a calmer one for the formbook as favourites flourish

Unlike yesterday’s seed massacre, the conclusion of the 1st round saw less shocks but plenty of awe by the fancied.

On the women’s side; Karolina Pliskova, Halep, Muguruza, Sharapova, Garcia, Konta and Kerber all won in straight sets, with a trickier three set win for Radwanska as well. Victories too for Bouchard, Sevastova, Safarova, Keyes, Giorgi and Vesnina. Only the returning Kvitova (no shame in losing to the evergreen Petkovic in a thriller that went the distance), disappointing Mladenovic and Watson supplied the big-name casualties of Day 2.

For the men, it was a similar story as Federer, Djokovic, DelPo, Wawrinka, Sasha Zverev, Goffin, Thiem, Berdych, Fognini, Monfils and Gasquet all won. Mischa Zverev retired and Bautista-Agut succumbed to the machine that is Fernando Verdasco, otherwise though it was all by the book on the whole.

Despite some ongoing jetlag, i’m now going to watch more highlight vids and treat myself to a bit of MOTD* (at last I can watch Man City lose).

Apologies for the rare football reference on this blog, they will crop up!
