OPINION: Harrison/Young spat highlights Twitter’s shortcomings

The Twittersphere was today full of the kind of accusations and opinions that threaten to tarnish it’s reputation as a relevant news source.

Donald Young today used the platform to accuse countryman Ryan Harrison of racially abusing him during their recent match in the New York Open.

Cue a spate of abuse for both players but mainly Harrison who was presumed guilty by seemingly everyone before he could type a character in defence.

Now, I have no proof or indeed no real opinion on whether the racist comment was made or not, but the point here is that what is usually a reliable platform, Twitter became mass hysteria which quickly drowned out any semblance of fact.

How quickly then both players’ become tarnished to many.

Another reminder that maybe some people should stay away from their keyboards.
