NEWS: Federer, Kvitova and Thiem make big statements for 2018.

cropped-sun-ball-tennis-court1.jpgWith the New York Open final still to come later tonight (my money is on Querrey downing Anderson by the way), there were an impressive trio of wins by three of 2018’s form players.

Thiem loving the clay.

Dominic Thiem has never lost in Buenos Aires, today defeating the recently in-British Bedene to take his 2nd Argentina Open title. One of the Austrian’s nicknames; Prince of Clay is looking more and more apt. A ninth title overall and his seventh in 13 months – this could still be a big year for a man who has faltered on the bigger stages recently.

Kvitova keeps up the pressure on the rest.

After Australia we all thought 2018 would be a year dominated by Kerber, Wozniacki and Halep; but after her St Petersburg triumph and this week in Doha especially, Petra Kvitova deserves to be amongst that fancied group.

Some fight in the Fed Cup only re-enforced this new fire in the Czech, and her roster of victims this week is incredibly impressive: Radwanska, Svitolina, Goerges, Wozniacki and Muguruza. Some effort!

Federer rattles Dimi to take title no.97

In a match which delivered on the aesthetics, Roger Federer cemented his new top ranking with a comprehensive victory in Rotterdam – his third. A bright start for Dimitrov was undone by a loose volley at 30 all in the fifth game, and with that the Bulgarian’s brittle mental game was shattered and the errors began to trickle from his racquet.

When Grigor was on-form, Federer often had no answer, but this was never delivered consistently enough to change the course of the match. For his part, Federer played sublimely.
