Roland Garros 2018: Keys and Stephens pumped as Novak dumped and Zverev thumped

Thiem powers past a hamstring hampered Zverev

The Austrian is playing too well anyway that this result may still have happened anyway. But as it was, a punishing clay court season culminating in too much energy spent in Paris meant Sacha Zverev’s hamstring pull was a little inevitable.

The first set was of good quality, and flashes thereafter in the early stages of the second, but soon it was clear that the ruthless Thiem rightfully would spare the German no mercy.

Cecchinato downs Djokovic in classic

A fairytale is being told right here. The journeyman Italian who had never won a grand slam match before a week ago and who with this win has already won four times the amount he took in prize money last season.

Novak struggled with a niggling injury throughout, but it again looked like the Serb would overcome it as he so often does.

An inspired performance from Cecchinato and that aura still not quite there meant the first two sets went against Djokovic. But a 6-1 set soon became 3-0 and it all looked like a five set rescue mission for Novak.

But no, a brilliant fightback allowed Cecchinato to record a huge win.

Stephens too powerful for Kasatkina

In a similar way to last year at Flushing Meadows, Sloane Stephens is ghosting under the radar here. Hitting powerfully and with restraint, the 10th seed was far too strong for Kasatkina. The 14th seed was too good for Wozniacki but all the variation in the world cannot stand against the efficient force with which Sloane had today.

Keys edges plucky Putintseva

In setting up a repeat of last year’s US Open finale, Madison Keys will meet Sloane in the semi final after a gutsy victory over the young star.

Putintseva will have won many hearts with her un-put-downable spirit and positive mindset against the endless barrage from the other side of the net.

Still, Keys it was who utilised her greater experience to prevail in a good contest.
