Ah New York, such good memories of mine and Sophie’s honeymoon last year kick-started by ticking off our attendance of three of the four majors. What a tournament this is, big stadia, easy access and knowledgeable and enthusiastic attendees.
Must return one day.
The 2018 tournament – with that commemorative logo – begins with a betrayal, I have begun proceedings with Amazon Prime’s coverage and not Eurosport – my usual grand slam bedfellow outside of Wimbledon.
Right then – predictions.
Men’s winner: Novak Djokovic (beats Rafa Nadal in final).
Djoko is looking right back at his best and as we all know, when he is back he is far too good for Rafa, Roger and the rest.
Women’s winner: Angelique Kerber (beats Svitolina in final).
Okay so in truth. the women’s game remains as impossible to predict as ever, but Kerber is loosely the form player still after the British summer. Halep, Wozniacki and Sloane are all far too inconsistent to justify their top rankings at the detriment of the rest.
Pick of Day 1
It has to be Dimitrov vs Wawrinka – although Halep vs Kanepi is a considerable start to things
