US Open 2018: Day 3 reflections and day 4 picks

Day three at Flushing Meadows was largely free of shock results, but delivered some quality contests throughout – really the only thing it confirmed once more is that I should give up trying to predict tennis outcomes (far more profitable recently with soccer, but that’s another story).

Yes, Murray, Muguruza and Sock lost yesterday, but given their respective impact from surgery and overall recent slump on form this isn’t really surprising.

More intriguing are the losses of Tsitsipas, Goerges and Gavrilova, up against tough opponents but all have enjoyed excellent years so far.

Anyway, boldly I go and have a look at Day 4 – I’ll leave my predictions at the door and simply pick my top matches of the day.

Djokovic vs Sangdren (Sangdren will have the home crowd here and may make things lively)

Sharapova vs Cirstea (Maria still not back of course and Cirstea is a stern test)

Mahut vs Zverev (If nothing else than to enjoy the Frenchman’s serve and volley style)

Garcia vs Puig (both talented, should be close)

Kyrgios vs Herbert (see above re Mahut)
