US Open 2018: Day 6 shocks as Day 7 promises more awe

The much hyped Federer-Kyrgios clash proved to be but a side note yesterday as some big names came a tumbling. Roger’s win showing that for all of his bravado, Kyrgios is still lacking on the big stages.

Instead we lost Zverev (Kohlschreiber), Bertens (Vondrousova), Kerber (Cibulkova), Garcia (Suarez-Navarro), Kvitová (Sabalenka) and Pouille (Sousa).

I haven’t heard of Vondrousova I’m afraid, but the victors here are all high pedigree so not complete shocks maybe, but not what the formbook pointed to,

We almost lost Madison Keys and Marin Cilic too in two epics that went the distance. Sharapova and Djokovic eased past unenviable opponents in Ostapenko and Gasquet and we saw Osaka, Tsurenko, Nishikori and Goffin looking very good in their victories.

Day 7 provides some intriguing match-ups again, my picks are:

Thiem vs Anderson (Anderson in 4 – just underway of course)

Serena vs Kanepi (Serena in 3)

Barty vs Pliskova (Barty in 3)

Isner vs Raonic (hopefully Isner in 4)
