More seeds exited Paris today, but the tournament is not (yet) any worse for it – the classic encounters just keep on coming.
Men
Of the men, Wawrinka and Tsitsipas couldn’t finish their matches against Dimitrov and Krajinov in two stunning encounters. But both remain two sets up and in control.
Rafa and Roger both progressed but the former especially was tested by David Goffin who unsurprisingly stole a set before the end, the Swiss was taken to a tense tiebreaker by 20 year old Casper Ruud.
Elsewhere though it was lengthy encounters full of quality, Paire defeated the injured Carreno Busta and Mayer vanquished Mahut in four sets.
Klizan, Nishikori and the tournament revelation of sorts Londero all needed the full five to squeak past Pouille, Djere and Moutet respectively.
Women
Alot of the women had no such trouble, Petra Martic employed the perfect game plan to defeat no.2 seed Pliskova 63 63 and other straight sets winners included Muguruza over Svitolina, Vondrousova over Suarez-Navarro and Vekic over Bencic.
Jo Konta probably had it easiest of all in her 62 61 drubbing of Kuzmova.
But still some epics ensued as Sevastova, Stephens and the always dangerous Kanepi were taken to three.
