A similar day to yesterday in terms of these overall picture. We have our expected frontrunners doing just that and a few eyebrow-raisers peppering the scoresheets.
The big stories again came from the women’s side, as Maria Sharapova -given a wildcard here and languishing in the 300’s on tour- beaten soundly by 19th seed Vekic. Not a surprise by any means, bit a story nonetheless as this household name now surely accelerates closer to retirement. Elsewhere there were good wins for Halep, Pliskova, Kerber, Bencic, Keys and Svitolina (clearly this is the stronger half of the draw) but Jo Konta is out, again no real shock there.
Rafa Nadal breezed through and there were confident wins for the other contenders Zverev, Medvedev and Thiem. Wawrinka and Kyrgios both prevailed and Gulbis dumped out Auger-Aliassime.
