No huge shocks on Day 4 Down Under but some unexpected results on paper and plenty of hugely entertaining fixtures I’ve been lucky enough to catch.
We start with the men and the real challengers remain in contention. Nadal, Zverev and Medvedev all won comfortably in 3. Thiem (def Bolt), Wawrinka (def Seppi), Kyrgios (def Simon), Monfils (def Karlovic) and Goffin (def Herbert) all had to bring their very best in some excellent marathon battles. Australia never ever fails to disappoint and so it is proving once again this year. Other dangerous players still lurking include Isner, the evergreen Verdasco, Fritz (def Anderson in 5) and the resurgent Gulbis.
Overall, the women’s seeds continue to fight another day on this side of the draw too. Pliskova, Halep, Bencic (def Ostapenko), Kerber, Svitolina, Vekic, Bertens and Mertens all won. Slight shocks came courtesy of Giorgi’s defeat of Kuznetsova and Iga Swiatek (not a name i’m familiar with personally) who dumped out Suarez-Navarro.
