Australian Open 2020: Kenin and Djokovic victories are poles apart

We had two rewarding finals to cap off the fortnight in Melbourne Park. Speaking from the heart and not the head, this was not the ending I wanted. If Halep wasn’t to win then I would’ve liked to have seen Garbine triumph. But not only did the Spaniard not deserve to take the title Saturday – so wasteful was she – neither was I wholly opposed to newcomer Kenin bagging herself a maiden major.

The Russia-born American has a heavy defence game matched by a total lack of nerves. A heady concoction and certainly by her victory speech we are looking at a composed young star with all of the tools, mentality and a grounded team to take her onwards.

For Garbine, this was a missed opportunity, I hope this doesn’t plunge her back into the doldrums.

Novak Vs Thiem was a familiar story. Not so much of the young generation failing again against the Big 3. No, Thiem has quashed this trend here, as Medvedev did in New York. Instead it is the familiar story of Djokovic’s mind games and momentum shifting injury feins. Such tricks have made him a divisive figure and he always will be sadly, even once he inevitably overhauls Rafa and Roger’s major titles.
