US Open 2021: Round 3 summary sees major shocks but not for Djoks

Post titles are getting worse I know, just blame a constant lack of sleep. I cannot even blame my baby daughter too much either. I was glued to the Tsitsipas Vs Alcaraz match the other night, which was just one of many a dramatic and surprising result in the 3rd round here in New York.

And such was the quality across the entire gamut of both draws I could have started anywhere but we will stick with the Grexit. 18 year old Alcaraz was electric from the onset but looked to have wilted come the fourth albeit at two sets up. Most would likely crumble after a 6-0 drubbing, and with tired legs I feared for a similar scoreline in the 5th. But it was the 3rd seed who looked to have choked when faced with the revived shotmaking of his opponent and the subsequent crowd support it had garnered.

But, this was the story across the board, as we lost the likes of Shapovalov, Rublev and Bautista Agut. Whether the result was surprising or not, the quality on show was such that the myriad of mouthwatering match-ups delivered on the hype. The coolest cat so far seems to be 2nd seed Medvedev who cruised through with relative ease compared to his compatriots, Djokovic included who withstood a typically battling start from Nishikori.

Ash Barty’s exit at the hands of Shelby Rogers dominated the headlines on the women’s side, but we also lost former champs Osaka and Stephens. Neither a surprise sadly, but for different reasons. Kvitova was again patchy in her loss to Sakkari, and overall it was the same story here. Quality oozing from every match across the board, and the result is typical of the Women’s game right now: the un-missable fixtures only continue, and with no clear favourite, it is wide open amongst a field of truly quality players.
