We’ve had shocks aplenty in this first week on the red stuff, but whilst yesterday lacked any jaw-dropping exits, it more than delivered with some quality matches across the board.
I thoroughly enjoyed Cam Norrie’s gutsy effort in vain against Kachanov late on, the Russian ultimately proving too good in an encounter that never really suffered any drop in quality. Other titanic battles saw Leyla Fernandez oust Bencic, a significant win as the Canadian has been a little quiet since New York and Bencic had looked a real contender here again. Another Swiss did prevail though, as Jil Teichman overcame Azarenka in a ding dong encounter that went the distance. Finally, Anisimova continues on after a hard fought 2 and a half setter against Muchova.
Comparatively routine stuff though for the men’s favourites on this side of the respective draws; Nadal, Djokovic and Alcaraz [impressive over Korda]. Straight sets too for Stephens, Mertens, Schwarzman [over Dimitrov who had looked good himself], Sasnovich, Gauff and Zverev who I am still not sure about here.
