Australian Open 2023: Day one picks and tournament thoughts

A new season is underway and as inevitable as Novak’s return to Melbourne, so too does AllThingsTennis continue to limp on in 2023 with the same set of vague promises of content in the year ahead. Netflix’s Break Point docuseries review, more Tribute Tuesdays, a long overdue feature on tennis in film and who knows maybe ATT Author himself will get back on court one day soon. You heard it here first.

But it’s that time of year to turn our attention Down Under for our first slam of 2023. ATT will struggle to catch much action but you’ll have daily updates of what went on, who’s in and who’s out.

Winners? It seems foolish to look past the returning Novak in the men’s competition, most are tipping last year’s double major finalist Casper Ruud but I’m not convinced, Rafa is defending champ of course and will always deserve to be mentioned. But more than ever, the current gen are increasingly ready to stake their claim. Expect Rublev, Auger-Aliasime and Fritz to show up in every sense. Still Djokovic has the smart money.

Again, everyone continues to tip Ons Jabeur and again I disagree, but with Osaka’s wonderful news leaving her out of the conversation and more pressingly Swiatek looking rather out of sorts already, there is room for Caroline Garcia and Jessica Pegula to wade straight in. Anisimova may go far but the other top seeds aren’t quite as convincing.

Day 1 matches to catch

Kenin vs Azarenka

Pospisil vs Auger-Aliasime

Edmund vs Sinner

Nadal vs Draper

van Uytvanck vs Kvitova

Swiatek vs Niemeier [UPSET ALERT]
