Dubai Delight – Venus is back with a bang and some deserved silverware

She’s got it, yeah baby she’s got it….couldn’t resist sorry

This week the tennis world has welcomed the return of one of it’s true darlings and great champions from a wilderness full of illness, injury and uncertainty.

The Sjogren’s Syndrome had looked to not just threaten but – until this week – end the elder Williams’ fantastic career at the top, but nothing much gets in the way of the American in Dubai be it illness or a stellar field.

Apart from finishing runner-up in Auckland last month, Venus’ triumph here has come seemingly from nowhere. Lacklustre results – certainly by the multi-major winner’s lofty standards were becoming frequently commonplace.

Instead, watching her this week in the emirate state where she finds herself now on a 15-match winning streak it was clear that the champ of 2009 and 2010 is back to her very best.

For how long remains a mystery of course – but an exciting one to find out.

Venus encompasses the power game and one that – when on song – few can withstand, Serena included.

Entering this year as a wildcard her list of victims is what makes this such an impressive tournament and a great way to kick-start my own attempts at weekly posts.

Vesnina, Ivanovic, Pennetta, Wozniacki and finally Cornet – all players enjoying excellent seasons so far and all despatched in straight sets.

For the Frenchwoman Cornet who dashed the hopes of many of the first all-Williams final since 2009 it has also been a week to remember. Those tears at the tail end of the first set merely showed Alize’s high expectations justifiably so after conquering Serena in the semi’s.

Williams Jr has had a less than stellar start to 2014 proceedings, and some careless choice of words after her defeat (’embarrassing’ hardly credits Cornet) earn her a spell on the naughty step.

Anyway as the French might say – not this week perhaps – Vive le Venus!!
