February and March results round-up

It’s been a while since one of these – a round-up of the winners on tour during the Spring hardcourt season post-Australian Open.

MEN

February saw a mix of winners from the old guard, evergreen, usual suspects and the new faces of tomorrow. Andy Murray took the month’s biggest scalp in Dubai, but elsewhere Jo-Wilfreied Tsonga proved why he has never really been far away from the top ten with two titles. Sam Querrey, Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev all claimed titles of their own, as their talents would dictate. Dolgopolov, Thiem and U.S number one Jack Sock were other notable victors.

The March sunshine double belonged to Roger Federer whose fairytale year continues and who will now take a break from the tour missing the whole clay season apart from Roland Garros.

Djokovic and Murray continue to be absent through injury and lack of confidence, Nadal would’ve tasted success somewhere one feels if not for Federer who truly has his number right now. Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka did well elsewhere – again with only the Australian Open victor thwarting likely silverware.

WOMEN

The headline-makers from January were absent in the months that followed. Yes Venus Williams came close and yes Simona Halep showed up here and there – but instead this was a period for the next generation and those threatening to take hold on the future of the women’s game – to take their spoils.

Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova mopped up the early prizes with titles too for Mledanovic, Babos and Tsurenko. Caro Wozniacki was the bridesmaid for seemingly most of these tournaments, with many a runners-up trophy, still she is back in the mix for sure.

March belonged to the unlikely duo of Vesnina and ‘Britain’s’ Konta (ahem). The sunshine double again serving up some dreams-come-true moments for the journeywomen of he tour.
